On July 3-7 my sister Jill with my neice Halee and newphew Trent and I went camping on a Island on Mooselookmeguntic Lake, in Oqusocco, Maine.  My sister Julee joined us on the 6th. This is where we most of our vacation took place when we were kids. No running water, electricity or showers. It brought back alot of good Mooselookmeguntic Lakememories.

Jill arrived at my house in the wee hours the morning of July 3rd. I wanted to be on the road at least by 6 or 7 am. I got up at 5:30 took my shower, walked the dogs and drank my coffee. By then it was 6:00 and Jill was up. I am the only morning person in the whole bunch, so she was very slow moving. By the time we got the truck pack, food in our stomach, and Jill's fishing liscense bought it was around 9-9:30 before we were on our way. We arrived in Oquossoc I believed around 12:00.

Oquossoc is a very small town, if even you want to call it that. Town consists of a Marina, sporting store, conveint store, and a post office. In Oquossoc there is Haines Landing where as a child is where we put our boats in to get to the island.  The lake is so big that there isn't a day that the lake does not have whitecaps somewhere on it. Like this day. If I remember correctly, it used to take us about a hour to get out to the island with the boat heavily loaded. At times it was very scary. We had to go slow because of the waves. Back then we had motor boats and now we only have kayaks and canoes. Hmm, how are we going to get out there to camp?

In June I went exploring and found out back in 1963 this man named Stephen Phillips purchase the island and 400 acres of main land. He was in the process of making all his land into a perserves, when he died. His wife continued his dream and made it happen. He wanted the land to stay the same as we knew it as kids for our kids, kids to enjoy like we have. I am so glad he did.  Where there was no road, now is a road and campsites.   Sign for the Campground

Right across from the office is Student Island, the same island we used to camp on. I was so excited. We could canoe and kayak over. I got a hold of my 2 sisters and told them what I found. From there the plans were set in place for us to go camping there.

Halee being 15 wasn’t that excited about going. No computer or phone over at the island. But she was a trooper and some of the time she actually enjoyed it. Especially when she got to go kayaking with her brother and got him soaked. Trent did a lot of fishing.  Us 3 girls did a lot of remembering.

PAST AND PRESENT

The part of the island that we camped on as kids still looked the same to Julee and me. Jill says so don't remember alot of the shrubs and trees. They were there just all grown now. There were only like 6 sites on the island and now there is 18. The part that we used to camped on had 2 covered shelters covering the picnic table which we always got one.remember Unfortunatly this trip these sites were already taken.

I remember on particular day a storm came up just as we were sitting down to eat. See here the storms appears with no warning. Jill was small and would be in the way and could get hurt, we told her to sit right there and don't move, while the rest of us, Mom, Dad, Mamie, Bampie, Julee and me, ran to the boats to pull them ashore more and tie them better. By this time it was thunder and lighting and raining. When we got back to the table, Jill was still sitting there and had ate her HOT supper. We still laugh about it. She ate a hot supper while we ate a COLD supper.

One night back then, we went to the bathrooms following a porcipine. I just found out that it was Julee, me and Jill. I couldn't remember who was with me until this camping trip. Jill thought it was a puppy. While we were there, this might sound gross to some people but to Jill and me it was exciting, we went looking for the old outhouses. Now they have all new ones. We found the start of the path and then it faded. But we finally found it and found the 2 holes, now covered up, where the old outhouses were.

There also was a spring on the island, where we got our drinking and cooking water from. We found that to. Now it is sealed off, due to the State of Maine made them do it for health reason, due to alot more people coming to the island. So now we have to carry our water in from the main land.

Back in the 1900's there was a bunch of 2 room cottages and a main dining hall. People would come here to fish, which the lake back then and now is famous for the rainbow trout and landlock salmon. They called it "The Birches." Birch TreesThe resort burnt down and they never rebuild it, due to the economy changing and people weren't going on vacations. Jill always had this plastic bag of crap when she was little. I kept on telling her to throw it away and she wouldn't. She eventually lost it.  While we were there, of course we went hiking and exploring. She took me right to the spot where all that crap was, which you still can see after all these years. She said see "Joyce here is all the broken pieces of pottery I used to have." So the crap became pottery, I never new. In the area where the pottery is we are thinking that this is the site of the dining hall. So now Jill has another bag of pottery. That was so exciting to her.

Every morning when I got  up I would make my coffee and take it to the water's edge and enjoy the peaceful start of the day, while Jill and the kids still slept. I was always joined by a male and female loon, and the beautiful scenery. Morning is my favorite time of the day. When Julee got there she also joined me. male and female loon

All to soon it was time to go home. Us 3 girls didn't want to leave. Julee has suggested that we do this not every year but every other year. And I am going to MAKE sure that happens.

It was such a awesome vacation, the best I have had in a very very long time.

Please check the gallery to see all the exciting picture.

Memorial Day Weekend 2005 I took an camping trip with my sister Jill and her two children, Halee and Trent, to the mountains of Tennessee. It was my first time going to Tennessee. It is very beautiful.

Smokey mts Now I know how the Smoky Mountains got their name. Everyday we went by, didn't matter what time of day, we went by the tops of the mts was always in the clouds.

Our campsite was in the middle of bear country next to an babbling brook. Since it is bear country everynite you have to take all you food and garbage back to the car. Make sure you don't leave any dirty dishes out to.

We went sightseeing as much as possible. We went to Cherokee, North Carolina and visited the Oconaluftee Village. There is alot of things to do in Cherokee. http://www.cherokee-nc.com/ Of course that was one of my favorite stops. On the way back from Cherokee we stop at Clingman's Dome. http://www.americasroof.com/tn.shtml That was quite an experience. You drive most of the way up the mountain but the last bit is hiking. That was an chore cause you were so high up the oxygen was slim. Very difficult breathing. When you got to the top you are about 6000 ft up, 30 degress colder, (which is was raining and damp that day) and snowing. The next stop was Dollywood http://www.dollywood.com/ in Piegon Forge and Dixie Stampede http://www.dixiestampede.com/. Both places I would love to go back at Christmas. One full day we spent in Gaitlngburg doing alot of window shopping.

One day we went hiking thru the woods behind our campsite. We had lunch bedside the babbling brook brook Then we continued on our way. We followed what look to be like an old road. Then we came upon this huge fireplace. Jill said to me there must have been an big house here at one time.

That's sums up my Camping trip. It was fun and very relaxing to be out in the wilderness like that. And no we didn't see any bears!!!
